Nursing Care for Dependent Patients with Psychiatric Comorbidity // Сестрински грижи при зависими пациенти с психическа коморбидност

Nursing is part of the health care system, and nursing care is the largest component and is directly related to positive patient outcomes. Comorbidity is the presence of a concomitant or additional disease to the main one. The combination of two disorders developing simultaneously affects nursing care, creating therapeutic and diagnostic difficulties to differentiate and treat each. This leads to increased use of health services and more frequent hospitalizations associated with increased financial costs. The relevance and significance of the nursing care problem for dependent patients with psychiatric comorbidity is invariably present in nursing practice and science. Despite the high prevalence and negative consequences for public health, little is known about the reasons for the increased comorbidity. The most common combinations are schizophrenia, personality disorder and bipolar affective disorders. The studies conducted in Bulgaria on the problems of dependent patients with mental comorbidity are scarce, and there are no studies on nursing care in this country. The purpose and tasks of the study are to investigate the organization of psychiatric health care in hospital and non-hospital settings and to determine the possibilities for their optimization. Two hundred ninety-four people were surveyed. The study was held in the Psychiatric Clinics at St. Marina University Hospital – Varna and at the Medical University “Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov” and its affiliates.
