Abstract
dc:descriptionDentistry is not an isolated discipline but an integral part of general medicine. Pathological processes in the oral cavity have similar with other systems and organs flow characteristics bearing interdependence and bilateral influence. The aim of this study is to investigate the bidirectional relationship of oral environment and common diseases. Our research shows that Candida flora sets itself in deep periodontal pockets in adults with chronic periodontitis. In children with renal disease incidence of Candida is higher than in controls. Unstimulated saliva contains viral HBV DNA, but not HCV RNA. Immunity after vaccination for hepatitis B have only 40 percent of children between 6 and 15 years of age and below 30% of dental technicians. Tracking the level of calprotectin in saliva reveals a decrease in values after antibiotic treatment and outlines a new marker for monitoring patients with periodontal problems. Half of Bulgarian patients have dental amalgam. The greatest amount of mercury is released throughout polishing and removal of old fillings. 30% of dentists have elevated levels of mercury in the blood. Insufficient measures to prevent mercury pollution are taken by. In patients with diabetes the levels of halitosis are three times higher. Older patients have higher levels of bad breath. The highest values we reported in patients with removable plate dentures. Oral health is impaired in the presence of common diseases, regardless of patient’s age.
