Digital Health Interventions For Minimising Depression and Anxiety Among Young Individuals: A Systematic Review
Abstract
dc:description.abstractMental health challenges like depression and anxiety continue to affect a growing number of young people in the UK, especially those aged 15 to 24. In response, Digital Health Interventions (DHIs) have become increasingly important as accessible, tech-driven tools for support and treatment. This dissertation explores how effective these interventions really are in helping young individuals manage and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Using a systematic review approach, the study draws on research published between 2015 and 2025, guided by the PICO framework, and refined through the PRISMA process. Ten carefully selected studies were analysed, with quality assured through the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). The findings highlight the value of digital platforms, mobile apps, and remote monitoring tools in delivering mental health support that is both timely and relevant. One striking insight is that up to 81% of premature mortality among young people is linked to mental illness—making the case for prioritising DHIs even more urgent. This research not only fills a gap in existing literature, where the impact of DHIs on young adults has been underexplored, but also offers practical recommendations for improving public health infrastructure and policy. Through thematic analysis, the dissertation sheds light on how digital tools can be better integrated into mental health care, and how their design and delivery can be refined to meet the real-world needs of young people. Ultimately, it advocates for a more responsive, tech-enabled approach to mental wellbeing—one that meets young individuals where they are.
