The Local Landscape Research Framework

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Archaeological research in landscapes should produce outputs and outcomes of value to the unique context that defines them. This includes the bespoke perceptions of intangible space as well as the physical place formed from a complex interconnected, multi-vocal and social narrative. However, many of the models used for designing archaeological research in landscapes today are framed against abstract definitions that limit the value of research products to a narrow audience within the overall landscape context. This paper proposes a new model for designing archaeological research in landscape settings; the Local Landscape Research Framework [LLRF]. The core purpose of the LLRF is to produce outcomes for landscape that are of value to those who perceive it by increasing our understanding (Outcome 1) and informing the future management (Outcome 2) of the archaeological resource within the context of bespoke perceptions of space and place. At all stages, the model has been developed to ensure that users must consider both the archaeological and wider social perceptions of the local landscape definition together. Outcome 1 is achieved by following the reconnaissance and evaluation pathways to developing a bespoke local landscape research context and agenda, whilst Outcome 2 is achieved by following a criteria-based system for selecting an appropriate level of landscape management plan. Next steps for moving the LLRF model forward into practice involve strengthening industry standards and guidance in landscape archaeology, improving archaeological and social evaluation strategies, and developing an interdisciplinary networking infrastructure for a more holistic approach to landscape management strategy.
