You Matter To Me; Mattering, Materialising and Unmattering.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

New materialism is at the forefront of modern artistic movements, the art of being, the art of matter-ing. This essay will explore what it means to matter, to be matter, and how relationships between the self and the rest of the world are forged. There is space for exploration of what it means to live and matter amongst other matter between Deluzian folds of life, semiotics, new materialism, Barthes’ death of authority and materiality. Mattering is the state being, living and evolving, through a new materialist lens. Validated by Deleuze and Guattari’s ‘becomings’ and Barthes’ death of the authority, agency becomes an attribute not only applicable to the human condition. Materialising uses semiology to discuss the material world, the matter of matter, including how material is valued. Unmattering is an affair of falling apart, finding beauty in decay, and observing how folds and unfolds occur.
