Employees experience of authentic leadership: a UK prespective

This phenomenological study explores Authentic leadership experience qualitatively in a UK retail industry’s work environment and addresses the research questions: This research will examine the perception of the followers working under Authentic leader supervision in order to find out what are the components of Authentic leader model practiced at workplace that led to authentic followership of employees. A purposeful sample of 14 participants from UK retail industry were collected. The participants in their in-depth interviews recalled their memories of their experience with Authentic leaders and how this experience had an impact on their professional and personal life. The following four main themes emerged out of this study; Genuine and Positive Attitude, Building Informal Relations, Formal Relations and Professional Aptitude which has been further classified, discussed and interpreted. The findings suggest that the positive contributions of Authentic leadership in organisation promotes honesty, relational transparency, and moral values. Further studies are suggested to be carried out on exploring the experience in other areas. This study concludes that the findings support the existing theory and outlines the dimensions of development of authentic followership by presenting a Authentic leadership model based on new themes emerged in this study. The extensive scanning of past and existing literature on leadership has been carried on and information was gathered from multiple sources, research papers, articles on various databases as well as books.
