Location based information has played an important role in sustainable decision-making for decades. The role of this information as an aid for sustainable forest management has been lightly explored by academia, policy makers and politicians. This study has used mixed qualitative methods and a diachronic approach to quantify the role of location-based information as an aid to sustainable forest management using the experience of Fiji. Results show the significance of location-based information to the sustainable management of forests at an operational level and within strategic decision making. Recommendations suggest that human resource management, organisational structures, technological capacity, and coherent documentation are key areas which need attention for an effective and efficient sustainable location-based information system.
