A review of suicide, suicidal ideation and preventative interventions in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis paper analyses the levels of suicidality in the LGBT (and QIA+ population where relevant) and examines how to prevent or diminish suicidal ideation, planning, attempted and completed suicides. The research is valuable as the rates of suicidality are significantly higher in the LGBT community than in the general populace which is a serious public health concern. Moreover, the research examines which preventative measures and interventions are effective. The research approach utilised in this dissertation is a systematic literature review. This paper identifies and describes influential books and articles; recurring conclusions, concepts and questions; patterns and trends; gaps in the literature and examines the efficacy of interventions including psychotherapeutic modalities. The literature review is structured thematically around the research question “What is the incidence of suicidality in the LGBT community and an exploration of the risks and preventative measures.” Minority Stress Theory and The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide are analysed and critiqued. These theories have been widely cited as explaining the higher level of suicidality in minority sexual and gender communities although both theories have their limitations. Most of the research focuses on adolescents and young adults as there is a paucity of research in respect of older LGBT individuals. The review confirmed that there are several areas where further research is needed and suggests changes to clinical practice.
