Business Process Optimisation for an International FMCG Supply Chain

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Studying the patterns of supply chain integration can significantly increase the performance of inter-organisational operations. The study is based on a real practice – particular Company, an international manufacturer of bottled water, which is growing very fast and spends significant funds for providing a high service level to customers. Finding the optimal ratio of service level and costs requires improvement the quality of collaboration between supply chain partners for enhancement of operations while reducing costs. Defining the optimal model of effective interaction between partners is the academic challenge for the study. The lack of research in practically-applicable tools supporting the integration of supply chains has defined the aim of the present study: to establish a model capable of optimising efficiency of a cross-border FMCG supply chain. To achieve the objectives of the study, the main advantages of integrating partners in the supply chain were identified, and factors contributing to effective integration studied. The theoretical basis for these are the stakeholder theory, resource-based view and relational view. To enrich the theoretical base of business process management, best practices were analysed. Supply chain priorities, as well as common problems affecting the stable operation of the supply chain, were discussed. These included the lack of resources, visibility, conflict of interest, the bullwhip effect, data quality and late deliveries. The research design was based on a mixed method to take advantage of inductive reasoning based on qualitative research complemented with the deductive reasoning study based on quantitative research. The methodology for business process modelling has been developed which relies on current real practice priorities, problems and improvements. Based on this methodology, a supply chain business process model was formulated by using the SCOR framework. The proposed business process model is shown to have a potential for eliminating bottlenecks and information gaps, as well as improving manageability through the continuous exchange of data pertaining to operations plans and their actual progress. This study is aimed at contributing to the academic body of knowledge related to the enhancement of competitive advantage and value creation in supply chain management through optimisation of the process of integration design and implementation in real-world international operations. The outcomes of the research are beneficial for organisations which seeking to increase the supply chain sustainability and scalability by continuously exchanging information and sharing each other’s resources and capabilities. At the same time, companies are offered guidelines on incorporating shared factors and interests into their strategies towards attaining interdependent competitive advantage.
