Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Against Black Teachers Through Equitable and Inclusive Practices: Northbound

This Dissertation-in-Practice (DiP) was crafted to address the Problem of Practice (PoP) at K1 Elementary, an Indigenous community school in Northern Canada. This work centers on initiatives aimed at dismantling anti-Black racism and discrimination faced by Black teachers, who have had to endure the negative consequences of being treated differently and unfairly concerning employment issues. Undergirded by Black Critical Theory as a theoretical approach and through the lens of transformative and ethical leadership, this body of work stands out as both unique and timely, as it proposes tailored, concrete, and feasible solutions to confront the issues of anti-Black racism and discrimination at K1 Elementary. From the perspective of a teacher who is a Professional Development Liaison (PDL) with the Quality Teachers’ Association (QTA), these solutions offer Professional Development (PD) initiatives to sensitize and educate the teaching staff and propose Professional Learning Community (PLC) strategies to address the issues. This DiP presents a change implementation plan (CIP) that integrates the Name Own Frame Sustain (NOFS) Model, Kotter’s Eight-Step Change Model, Deming’s PDSA Cycle, Leader-Member Exchange Theory, and Lewin’s Force Field Analysis as essential tools to systematically investigate, monitor, and evaluate the change process. These models operate in tandem to provide a clear pathway and structure necessary to dismantle anti-Black racism and discrimination, in providing a safe and inclusive working environment for Black teachers at K1 Elementary.
