Evolution of Female Profile Aesthetics in Fashion Magazines Over the Last Century (1920-2019): An Orthodontic Soft-Tissue Analysis

Beauty standards have evolved over time, and understanding the dynamic nature of facial aesthetics is crucial for orthodontic practice. This study aimed to assess changes in female soft-tissue facial profile aesthetics as portrayed in fashion media over the past century. A total of 1,527 profile images of female models were collected from a prominent fashion magazine, with at least one issue per year represented from 1920 to 2019. Images included photographs and realistic drawings, standardized for size, orientation, and head position. Key soft-tissue landmarks were digitized, with measurements focusing on facial convexity, maxillary and mandibular position, lip projection and volume, and chin and throat dimensions. Significant changes (p < 0.05) were observed across the decades, including a shift toward less convex profiles, fuller lips with increased projection, and greater mandibular prominence. These findings may reflect evolving beauty "ideals" and guide orthodontic treatment planning and other disciplines focused on facial aesthetics.
