Drawing from disciplinary bases in the medical and health humanities, this field has been identified as a promising cross-disciplinary effort to improve the accountability, understanding, and efficacy of global health interventions. The first section of this dissertation traces the origins of the field from the medical humanities and global health. The distinctly activist educational-political origins of the medical humanities and the current, highly eclectic professionalized medical humanities have played important roles in forming the early structures of the global health humanities. Turning to global health, the origins of global health in colonial enterprises and increasing contemporary multi-actor complexity help set the stage for perceived utility of humanities-based approaches critique and contextualization. In the second section, I examine the academic and professional structures, content, and relevant literatures of the emerging field of the global health humanities today, focusing specifically on three areas: literature & narrative; international medical humanities education; and critique.
