Finding ways to simulate garment construction techniques within fashion design education
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe practice-led research project critically examined the possibilities of simulating various garment construction (sewing) techniques within the realm of fashion design education. The investigation aimed to extend existing practices by exploring integrating emerging technologies to augment traditional garment-making methods. The research drew from industries such as aviation that employ simulation training tools. The research endeavours to identify potential applications of simulation in fashion design education. The study is underpinned by examining pedagogical pathways and emerging technology and has critically analysed aspects of technology within the industry and teaching and learning. The primary objective of the study was to enhance garment making by investigating a sophisticated technological pathway encompassing QR codes, mobile applications, and Augmented Reality. This research is underpinned by garment-making strategies based on traditional teaching and learning methods and emerging technologies. It motivates the question: What are the impacts of technology on traditional techniques in production and the teaching of fashion design, and how are these new tools being implemented? Through this inquiry, the study sought to advance the understanding of garment construction within the evolving landscape of technology and education.
