Industrial Energy Efficiency: Exploring Synergies with Industry 4.0 Technologies at Operational Level

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Energy management is crucial for reducing energy consumption and enhancing competitiveness and sustainability in industrial organizations. However, research gaps exist, concerning energy management and its impact at the shop floor level, integrating production resources and operational performance. Similarly, Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies promise enhanced efficiency, yet their synergies with energy management remain unexplored. Therefore, to address the research gaps, this thesis aims to develop frameworks for decision-makers to assess the implications of energy management services and energy efficiency measures on production resources and operational performance, as well as to understand the impact of Industry 4.0 technologies on enabling or boosting performance. The research consists of three components: a qualitative investigation of energy management practices, barriers, and drivers of energy efficiency in energy-intensive industries; the development of a comprehensive framework for integrating energy management services, production resources, and productivity features; and an examination of the role of Industry 4.0 technologies in enhancing energy efficiency measures at the shop floor level. The findings of this thesis contribute to energy management and Industry 4.0 and can benefit academia and industrial decision-makers in the supply chain of energy efficiency solutions.
