The role of the elementary/middle school counselor as perceived by counselors and teachers in Hamilton county, Tennessee

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if a consensus exists among elementary and middle school counselors and teachers regarding the ideal and actual role of the counselor. The sample of this study was designed to include all the elementary and middle school counselors and a sample population of teachers in Hamilton County, Tennessee. The sample size included twenty-eight(seventy percent) of the forty counselors and one hundred and fifty-nine(sixteen percent) of the teachers in Hamilton County. This study was essentially a survey of counselors' and teachers'perceptions of the elementary /middle school counselor's role. The survey instrument in this study was a questionnaire which included thirteen items to be rated on a seven point Likert-type scale. Counselors and teachers indicated the amount of time to be spent on the thirteen counselor responsibilities.A Mann-Whitney statistical test was used to determine if significant differences existed between teachers' and counselors'perceptions of the ideal and actual role of the counselor. The mean and median score was calculated for each responsibility and was then ranked.Interpretation of data indicated a general consensus between counselors' ideal and actual roles and teachers' perceptions of the counselor's role. Counselors and teachers indicated that classroom guidance and individual and group counseling should consume most of the counselor's time, while coordination of student records, coordination of student testing, and organizational activities should occupy the least amount of the counselor's time.
