Influence of Parenting Styles and Protective Behavioral Strategies on College Students' Alcohol Use and Alcohol-Related Consequences

<p>The current study examined the relationships between parenting styles, protective behavioral strategies (PBS), alcohol use and negative alcohol-related consequences in college students. While parenting styles have been associated with alcohol use, there are no studies which have investigated the relationship between parenting styles and negative alcohol-related consequences. Further, while alcohol use and negative consequences have been related to PBS, no studies have investigated the relationship between parenting styles and PBS. The current study hypothesized that PBS will be a partial mediator between parenting styles and alcohol use. The current study also hypothesized that PBS will be a partial mediator between parenting styles and alcohol-related consequences. Specifically, authoritative parenting will have a positive effect on PBS, while authoritarian and permissive parenting will have a negative effect on PBS. In tum, PBS will have a negative effect on alcohol use and alcohol-related consequences. The current study sampled 345 students from The University of Southern Mississippi student population. Simple mediation analyses were conducted as outlined by Preacher and Hayes (2008) to examine if PBS partially mediates the relationship between parenting styles and alcohol use and alcohol-related consequences. The results of this study found that PBS significantly mediated the relationship between authoritarian and authoritative that PBS significantly mediated the relationship between authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles and alcohol-related use. Further, PBS were shown to significantly mediate the relationship between authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles and alcohol-related consequences. PBS were not shown to significantly mediate the relationship between permissive parenting and alcohol use or alcohol-related consequences.</p>
