A Safe Patient Mobilization Program to Reduce Care Workers’ Musculoskeletal Injuries in Acute Rehabilitation

<p>Musculoskeletal injuries resulting from repeated manual patient handling tasks occur in our 46-bed rehabilitation unit, at a high rate among RNs and CNAs (5.8 injuries per 100 FTE). These results represent a significant performance gap considering that our floor is fully equipped with assistive devices including ceiling mounted lifts in every room. A staff survey demonstrated a knowledge gap in terms of mobilization policy, skills, and devices available. The purpose of this educational program built in collaboration with physical therapists is to develop staff knowledge, autonomy, and self-confidence in assessing and mobilizing patients safely by using routinely the technology available in the unit. It has for ultimate goal to reduce staff musculoskeletal injuries, workers’ compensation cost, and potential negative outcomes for patients such as falls, pain, and skin tears. The education sessions provided combined oral presentation and hands-on practice. Their efficiency was evaluated via pre/post education surveys. Results demonstrated a 55.3% increase of self-confidence in managing patient mobilization. The educational effort is sustained by champions on the floor. These results show the need to develop occupational prevention programs to improve hospitals’ working conditions that will benefit not only nursing staff, but also patients and the organization as a whole.</p>
