Strengthening Specimen Management to Eliminate Specimen Errors

<p>The objective of this CNL Internship Project is to eliminate pre analytical specimen errors. This project takes place in an Ambulatory Surgery Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Procedures done in the center consist of Gastroenterology (GI), Otolaryngology, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Gynecology, Pain Injections, and Plastic procedures. The majority of specimens collected on a daily basis are primarily from GI procedures. Multiple errors regarding specimens have been reported by the lab since the beginning of 2016. These errors included labeling, patient information, requisition forms, labs, and fixatives. Data from quality assurance reports, specimen logs, and variance reports will be reviewed to monitor the effectiveness of the 3-step verification process. The methodology that will be used is Lewin’s Change Theory. Nurses and surgical technicians will be trained, observed, and monitored to implement the 3-step verification process in attempt to eliminate pre analytical specimen errors that occur at the facility.</p>
