California Native American Baskets Pop-Up Exhibit

<p>For my capstone project, my plan is to create a pop-up exhibit at the California Academy of Sciences that focuses on California Native American baskets from the Academy's Anthropology research collection. The California Academy of Sciences, located in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California, is a world-class institution that houses a large collection made up of specimens and objects from their many different research departments. The museum's website states, "The California Academy of Sciences is a renowned scientific and educational institution dedicated to exploring, explaining, and sustaining life on Earth" (http://calacademy.org/about-us/). The Academy began in 1853 as primarily a research institute, and its first official museum opened in 1874 in what is now Chinatown in San Francisco. The problem that my project addresses is the lack of accessibility of many of the research objects and specimens located at the Academy, specifically within the Anthropology department. This proposed pop-up exhibit not only puts objects on display that would otherwise be stored away within the collection space, but it addresses issues of sustainability and the preservation of culture.</p>
