In this capstone project, I explore the need and propose a development plan for an evaluation framework to measure the extent to which 2nd–5th grade students practice the 4Cs during field trips at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA). In 2010, the National Education Association identified four skills (Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity) that students will need in 21st century academia and workplaces. Collectively referred to as the 4Cs, these skills provide a base for classroom teachers to pursue the Common Core State Standards, currently being incorporated into public schools in forty-two states.
OMCA has identified the need to support classroom teachers by infusing the 4Cs into field trips, and while new field trip experiences have been prototyped since 2012, the Museum lacks a robust evaluation process with which to compare new and existing field trips. I propose that Museum staff partner with classroom teachers and an external evaluator to iteratively design an evaluation framework that can collect data useful to teachers and museum professionals alike.
