The population served is primarily Native American and the area encompasses a large land area. Methamphetamine use during pregnancy has become a growing concern prompting review of policy and processes. The global aim of the project is to increase the rate of successful treatment for Native American women who are abusing methamphetamines during their pregnancy with the specific aim of increasing treatment rates by 5% yearly after the first year of implementation. Creation of a task force was necessary to have representation from the different programs within the microsystem who will be directly involved in the care planning for this population. Utilizing a fishbone diagram, SWOT analysis and implementing a PDSA approach the task force was able to identify problems and implement a change process to develop a strategic approach to combating the rising mates of methamphetamine use in pregnancy. Departmental communication, policy and protocol were identified as immediate concerns for intervention. Careful consideration was given to compliance with the unique laws and policies that exist within both the Tribal and Federal healthcare entities and governments. Frequent reassessments of the microsystem to ensure the needs of the population are being met will be performed to ensure that goals are being met and change is effective.
