Improving Patient Satisfaction, Wait Times, and Access to Care in a College Health Setting; Expanding the RN Role as Prescribing Agent With Standardized Procedures
Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>The CNL theme for this project is Nursing Leadership, Advocate for the Profession and is inspired by the Institute of Medicine’s call for all nurses to work to the maximum scope of their practice. The specific aim was to demonstrate RN confidence working independently, and proficiency using one RN protocol to provide hormonal contraception with an overall aim of improving patient satisfaction and access to care. This project took place in a rural university student health center where family planning and contraception services are the number one service provided.</p> <p>The RN visit project has been multidisciplinary and collaborative in creating standardized procedures, guided by the board of nursing that allows RNs to provide medication under protocol. Patients with low acuity needs, such as those who seek contraception, can be cared for by the RN who can provide medication as the prescribing agent, freeing up providers for other visits. Since the pilot program, there has been a significant increase in complexity of care that student health center RNs are providing. FMEA has been used to create audit and training tools to ensure safe practice. This project demonstrated improved RN confidence and zero errors transmitting medication and supports the value of the RNs role and contributions to improving access to care.</p> <p><em>Keywords</em>: registered nurse, college health, standardized procedures, prescribing agent, RN visit, affordable care act</p>
