Sustainable future for Hong Kong: An assessment of current sustainability reporting trends, attitudes and future developments

<p>Hong Kong is one of the world’s leading international financial centers, a hub for cross-cultural exchange, and home to about 7 million people. As with all booming economies, but especially in Asia, industrialization, material consumption, resource depletion, pollution, and waste generation are overlooked as businesses try to create faster, newer, smarter, and cheaper products/services to meet the needs of the people. Sustainability reporting, also known as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting, helps companies and organizations measure, understand, and communicate their economic, environmental, social and governance performance and impacts (i.e., pollution), provides internal strategic overview of the company’s non-financial data, improve transparency, and manage change more effectively (“About sustainability reporting”, 2015). However, establishing sustainability reporting as the status quo in Hong Kong will prove to be a challenge for the future as attitudes towards sustainability are still lackluster and companies uphold views of it being trivial and burdensome. This paper is the culmination of a 300-hour fieldwork experience at Alaya Consulting, a sustainability consultancy firm in Hong Kong. The aim of the project is to obtain a general assessment of the sustainability reporting trends, attitudes and future developments in Hong Kong, establish collaborations with social enterprises and non-governmental organizations for sustainability promotion and awareness, and finally establish Alaya Consulting as the champion for sustainability within all sectors.</p>
