Impact of a Two Component Intervention on Aspiration Rate among Stroke Patients

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p> This project’s aim is to improve outcomes of stroke patients who are admitted to the telemetry floor by reducing their risk of aspiration. There were three objectives: (1) reduction of 20% in aspiration cases; (2) at least a 90% increase in nurse confidence in caring for stroke patients; (3) attaining at least 90% compliance with conducting bedside swallow screens on stroke patients.<strong> </strong> <strong>Methods:</strong> Data that identified the most effective intervention was derived from studying the results from the pre-intervention survey. The results indicated that 32% of the nurses were not confident in taking care of and identifying stroke patients with dysphagia and patients at risk of aspiration. There were 63% of nurses that agreed to try using pulse oximetry while conducting the bedside swallow. Additionally, there were 76% of nurses agreed to have more training on this topic.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> The results included 100% of the participants indicating that the teaching session was helpful and 94% indicating that they are more confident. Also, 93.3% of the participants indicated that they will use pulse oximetry monitoring while conducting the bedside swallow screen to help identify patients who aspirate. </p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Two of the three objectives have been met thus far and third is ongoing. Education sessions including educational material proved to be successful methods of increasing nurses’ confidence level. This project will be carried on until December, 2015. Plan is to audit stoke charts on telemetry floor on a bimonthly basis to catch aspiration cases.</p> <p><strong> </strong></p>
