ICU Delirium and the Relationship with Pre-Existing PTSD within the Veterans Population
Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of PTSD in the Veteran population admitted to the ICU, and the relationship of pre-existing PTSD to delirium. According to Douglas (2008), there is 40% to 87% of incidence of delirium in the ICU; the cost of delirium is $60,516 to $64,421 per patient per year. According to the Census Bureau (2011), 7% - 8% of the population will have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in their lifetime with 5.2 million adults in a given year. As of September 2010, there are 22.7 million veterans in the nation. There have been no studies linking both PTSD and delirium in the ICU specifically in the Veteran population.</p>
