Comportamiento tribológico y mecánico de biopolímeros avanzados
Abstract
[ENG] This PhD Thesis places at the centre sustainability in the improvement of the mechanical and tribological behaviour of polymers without compromising their technical specifications, aiming for the optimization of more environmentally friendly materials in terms of matrix and additives. The addition of graphene to a protic ionic liquid has induced the apparition of weak gel-like interactions at high content, with consequences to their fluidity and electrical conductivity. The ionic liquid and the dispersion with the highest nanophase concentration have been used in the reinforcement of the tribological response of epoxy resin coatings on carbon steel, improving the autocatalysis of curing kinetics and achieving reduction in the friction coefficient up to 94 % as external lubricants and up to 84 % as additives, preventing wear. The subsequent study of acrylic bio-based resins as sustainable alternatives has displayed a substrate protection reaching a higher load, matching the results with the ionic liquids and showing a 76 % friction reduction with the nanofluid. The additional monomer content in polyhydroxyalkanoate copolymers has been linked to a lower crystallinity, higher thermal stability, and a softer and more ductile mechanical response. These aspects have led to higher coefficients of friction, a more severe wear and lower load dependence. Based on the acquired information, the most rigid and fragile copolymer, PHBV, has been studied to improve its response using sustainable additives. Its lubrication with the ionic liquid and the nanofluid has offered a 90 % reduction to the friction coefficient and a three-decade decrease of the wear rate. On the other hand, the modified nanoclays incorporated into the polymer formulation have reached the formation of long-scale interactions that have led to an increase in the stiffness and the crystallinity. As an alternative more effective strategy, both this copolymer and the reference homopolymer PHB have been blended with other bioplastics, showing a partial miscibility between phases. In the case of PHB, its blend with polybutylene succinate has induced a greater thermal stability, a better surface finish and a mechanical response than preserved its original rigidity while increasing its ductility up to a concentration threshold, further improved by the subsequent incorporation of a natural monomer and lignin. For PHBV, the incorporation of up to 25 % to polylactic acid has allowed to control the crystallinity, the thermal stability and the fluidity, solving some of the fundamental problems of the polymers. This has also reduced the wear rate up to a 43 % in comparison to polylactic acid, maintaining the low friction coefficient and deleting PHBVs tribological fragility.
