Modelling and analysis of a non-pneumatic tire-road interaction using finite element method

Tires are critical components of a vehicle, responsible for transmitting all forces and moments generated during contact with the ground. Therefore, all tire characteristics directly influence tire-road interactions, including tractive and cornering performance. In this thesis, a non-pneumatic tire of size 15/6N6 was modelled and verified using Finite Element Analysis. The non-pneumatic tire model was verified through static and dynamic tests, including static footprint, vertical stiffness, and drum-cleat analyses. Tire-road interaction characteristics such as tractive effort, rolling resistance coefficient, lateral force, and energy dissipation were evaluated under various operating conditions, including longitudinal speed, vertical load, and slip angle. Additionally, Von Mises stress distribution was analysed to identify critical spoke regions prone to failure. The results established the safe loading conditions for the non-pneumatic tire and identified the slip angle at which cornering force saturation occurs, contributing valuable insight into the performance and structural behaviour of non-pneumatic tires.
