Examining the haptic prototyping process using a novel open source haptic creation tool

Haptics have advanced rapidly in the past decade and are increasingly used by AAA game developers. They are an essential way of delivering tactile information in everything from watches to theatre seats. Our research aims to improve how haptic effects can be prototyped and iterated on by developers. We made SIGHTT, which creates haptic effects for DualSense gamepads. This tool allowed our participants to prototype haptic effects for many different game scenarios, despite them having little experience creating effects previously. We were also able to examine some specific usage patterns that may be useful to shape how haptic effects are created in the future. Broader developer use of haptics has the potential to advance knowledge and help drive progress in the field. We believe that this project can empower more developers to better use haptic devices in the future and bring a new layer of perception to our digital experiences.
