Construct validity and sensitivity of the spine dysfunction, stress & sensory-motor integration questionnaire in individuals with neck dysfunction

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The Spine Dysfunction – Stress and Sensory-Motor Integration Questionnaire (SD-SSMI-Q), a newly developed questionnaire, can reliably document sensory processing and sensorimotor dysfunction in those with altered sensorimotor integration (SMI) from a neck dysfunction. The SD-SSMI-Q has not been assessed for known-group validity or sensitivity to change in those with a neck dysfunction. In order to determine known-group validity, the questionnaire was administered to individuals with and without neck dysfunction at baseline. The SMI subscale of the questionnaire (subsection C) demonstrated that it is able to differentiate healthy from neck dysfunction. Following this, the same questionnaire was administered after 12-weeks of treatment in individuals with varying levels of neck dysfunction. The overall score of the SMI subscale could detect changes following a clinician administered treatment plan. This demonstrates that the SMI subscale of this questionnaire is valid in differentiating those with and without altered SMI as well as capturing changes in self-reported SMI.
