Dynamic energy management system of microgrid
Abstract
dc:description.abstractControlling the power dispatch and meeting the load demand in a power system made up of distributed energy sources (DERs) needs a power management/dispatch system at secondary control level, whether the microgrid (MG) is connected to the grid or operates in isolation. Power is either drawn from or supplied to the main grid via a MG operating in grid-connected mode, with appropriate market regulations in place to optimize efficiency, cost, and other metrics. When the main power grid is in a faulted state due to either natural disasters or power quality crisis, the MG can isolate from the utility and continue to deliver power to its vital loads. To minimize expenditures on grid energy, DERs, and maximize load consumption, an optimization technique is required. In this thesis, to prove the efficacy of selected optimization algorithms, both a single objective EMS (Energy Management System) and a multi-objective EMS are evaluated in either the grid-connected or islanded modes of operation. The algorithms evaluated in this thesis are one single-objective and one multi-objective and these are tested on two major case studies. In the first case study, three methods were tried out and compared: the Hybrid Feedback PSO-MCS (HFPSOMCS) algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Modified Cuckoo Search (MCS). In the second case study, three methods were also tried out and compared: the Multi-objective Hybrid Integrated MCS PSO (MOHIMCSPSO), the Multi-objective PSO (MOPSO), and the Multi-objective MCS (MOMCS). Finally, to prove the efficiency of the new single-objective optimization technique, a proof-of-concept model was also built and tested.
