Improving x-ray operator performance using virtual environments
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThere are significant limitations in the training for x-ray operators under current regulatory and operational constraints. Advances in technology now allow for the creation of realistic virtual reality environments, which, when designed and implemented based on scientific principles and instructional system design concepts, can allow operators to test the full range of their tactics, techniques, and procedures. This research thesis presents novel synthetic virtual reality training environments for explosive ordnance disposal and security screening. This includes the development of physics simulation package for generating and imaging x-rays which can be applied in interactive, realistic and variable training environments for operators.
