The impact of land reclamation on tidal dynamics and suspended-sediment dynamics in Jiaozhou Bay, Qingdao, China

Abstract

dc:description

Using a tidal dominated bay, Jiazhou Bay (JZB) in Qingdao, China, as a sample, this thesis contains three parts: 1) the impact of land reclamation on tidal dynamics; 2) the impact of land reclamation on suspended-sediment dynamics; 3) the impact of wave-current interaction on suspended-sediment dynamics. Over the past few decades, there has been large-scale land reclamation in Jiaozhou Bay, which inevitably has affected the hydrodynamics and sediment transport in the bay, and thus has consequences for its management. In this study we set up a three-dimensional barotropic hydrodynamics model based on the Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) to investigate changes in tidal dynamic factors in JZB from 1935 to 2008. A three-dimensional, high-resolution tidal model coupled with the University of New South Wales sediment model (UNSW-Sed) based on FVCOM) was set up to study the suspended-sediment dynamics and its change in JZB due to land reclamation over the period 1935 to 2008. The sediment model coupled with the tide model was used to investigate the changes in suspended-sediment dynamics due to the land reclamation from 1935 to 2008, including suspended-sediment concentrations (SSC) and the horizontal suspended-sediment fluxes. We also evaluate the primary physical mechanisms including advection of suspended sediments, settling lag and tidal asymmetry, which control the suspended-sediment dynamics with the process of land reclamation. A fast wave model developed Mellor et al. (2008) was coupled with FVCOM to study the effects of wave-current interaction on suspended-sediment dynamics during strong wave events in JZB. The coupled wave and current model can run with higher efficiencies compared with the wave models like SWAN (Simulating WAves Nearshore) and WAVEWATCH III. It is found that even though the combined wave-current bottom stress has the largest effect, the effect of mean current advection and refraction of wave energy, wave radiation stress, and wave pressure stress (listed from high to low) are also comparable.
