The Development of a Generic Strategic Planning Methodology for Organizations Embarking on E-Business in Thailand

Abstract

dc:description

E-Business is a business transformation using Internet technology. Being an EBusiness, an organization will be at an advantage compared with peers in a traditional business model. However, E-Business is still an evolving discipline with no standard process to formulate an E-Business strategy. Both mature and less mature organizations can become an E-Business at high cost of trial and errors or by working with costly consultants. Therefore, there is a planning capability barrier to start an EBusiness transformation journey for the first time. This research adopted a Design Research methodology in developing a generic, yet customizable, set of tools to guide organization to start their transformation into E-Business: so called E-Business Strategic Planning System (EBSPS). The EBSPS was developed through an extensive review of the E-Business and strategic planning literature that established the parameters for the design of the system. Based on the design parameters, the planning approach, planning tools and techniques were selected and the agenda was formed for group discussion. The output of EBSPS is the E-Business roadmap which depicts the timeline for E-Business strategic initiatives. The evaluation method for assessing the effectiveness of EBSPS was described as well. Also, the research described the use of the EBSPS in three Thai organizations in different business areas: printing, asset management, and engineering consulting business, providing guidelines and case studies for the practitioners. The result of the initial demonstration of EBSPS was successful both from requirement compliance and research guideline compliance with learning for improvements suggested for the future use of EBSPS.
