Walk. Paint.

In this paper I will explain my research based painting and performance art practice. Walking is at the crux of my research it forms a strong link between my performance and painting practice. I begin by studying fellow walkers within the Western art canon such as the flaneur and the psycho-geographer, along with artist Richard Long, Francis Alys and Shaun Galdwell. Walking literally leads into mark making and how I approach painting. Abstract Expressionism and its constituents such as Ian Fairweather, John Peart, Peter Poulet, Peter Sharp, Tony Tuckson, Jackson Pollock and James Drinkwater are discussed in relation to Al Poulet’s practice. Extending beyond painting and walking Poulet has created ‘painting objects’. These are paintings created from debris found whilst walking and these stand independent of the gallery wall. This alters the traditional method of exhibiting paintings relying on the viewer to complete the work. The audience must walk the gallery and navigate the paintings in order to experience and understand them. The context in which this paper and the accompanying exhibition have been produced is important to the understanding of the work. The changing urban landscape of inner city Sydney and the Australian landscape have shaped this body of work and research.
