Forge of Myths and Legends

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Forge of Myths and Legends is a coming-of-age novel that explores identity, diplomacy, justice, liberation, and acceptance while pushing against the historical narrative of imperial conquest and supremacy, elevating the untold stories of myths and legends during the medieval Viking Age. The story is told in third person in the perspective of a young woman, Erika, with desires to free herself from her family's influence and become a Viking. Instead, Erika is chosen as a Seer and is thrust into the world of the gods as she and Loki must face the same enemy, finding worth in themselves to obtain freedom. The story contains interlacing stories in the perspective of the Norse god of mischief, Loki, navigating through the myths, showcasing the other side of history, pushing against the ruling narrative, and fighting injustice. Set on a fictional island in a male-dominated Viking society, Erika struggles to maintain agency and tenacity while being forced into visions of the gods and unlocking a hidden ability. When Erika cannot perform to the expectations of authority, she is punished by being thrown into the dungeon with the enemies of the state. Expecting to be destroyed by the Arthurian knights, Erika instead finds friendship, acceptance, and kindness. With the help of Loki, Erika and the knights must free themselves from the grasp of the Seer, the gods, and oppression. Broadly, Forge of Myths and Legends delves into cultural diversity, conflict resolution, and self-discovery.
