Numerical Modeling of UHPC using a Concrete Damage Plasticity Model
Abstract
dc:description.abstractUltra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is a type of concrete that is known for its high compressive strength, elastic-plastic or strain hardening tensile behavior, and enhanced material ductility and toughness. These properties are achieved through the use of a low water-to-binder ratio, optimized matrix packing density, and the addition of fibers. Although UHPC has the potential to be used in innovative and economic structural applications and is well-suited for efficient structural design against extreme loads, its unique mechanical behavior can lead to atypical structural failure modes that traditional analysis and design procedures may not be able to accommodate. Therefore, in order to fully leverage the benefits of UHPC in structural design, a constitutive model that can accurately capture its response under various physical conditions is necessary. In this thesis, a calibration technique for a constitutive model for UHPC is proposed and validated, and guidance for its use is provided. The effectiveness of the calibration technique in simulating distinctive UHPC attributes through various quasi-static numerical simulations is demonstrated. Finally, the modeling results are discussed and directions for future analytical and numerical modeling efforts and necessary experimentation to increase the generalizability of the adopted technique are suggested.
