Unmuted: An intersectional approach to Latinx women with eating disorders

Eating disorders are a heavily saturated sight of inquiry in academia. The majority of the research focuses on white women yet there are some invaluable studies about nonwhite communities. Social support is provided to women with eating disorders. A proven model states that emotional support; being there for an individual with an eating disorder, tangible support; a pamphlet or handout, and informational; the information on the tangible item or information from a reputable source, are the three main avenues of support. The present study uses an online context to discover whether or not the proven social support model is accurate for a non-white community. Latinx women are not void of suffering from eating disorders. The present study uses an online context of academic sources combined with an exploration of Reddit threads to compare and contrast the discourses being used by Latinx women in an online setting with the discourses being used about them. Versus coding is used to reveal the similarities and differences of the different source types to analyze how Latinx women are talking about eating disorders online and how that information is compared to the already existing academic literature.
