Fingerprint-based security is becoming more popular and has been implemented on common objects like doors, cars, and suitcases. The Fingerprint Diary will keep children's personal diaries secret and give the user peace of mind, knowing nobody can access their information. This technology can later be implemented into a briefcase for companies with top secret information. Other future implementations include fingerprintsecured thermostats and alcohol or chemical storage cabinets. This will give parents a guaranteed method of keeping children away from dangerous substances. The Fingerprint Diary prototype was built using two Atmel 8051 microcontrollers, a fingerprint module (FPM) made by Integrated Biometrics, and a secure shell taken from Mattel's voice-activated diary already on the market. The Fingerprint Diary was designed and built in a time span of four months. The main functionality of the diary, including verifying, registering, and deleting users is fully operational. When the FPM verifies a registered finger, the shell is opened via a latch controller by a DC motor.
