A Naturalistic Analysis of Creativity in Terms of the Creator and the Critic

Creativity presents a challenge for researchers given its characteristics. Creative behavior is said to be novel and unique with respect to previous behavior, but this leaves open more questions than answers. A review of the behavior analytic literature in English on the topic of creativity has progressed from the study of novel behavior to self-management with the aim of increasing its probability. Although the research on novel behavior and variability has been fruitful, it seems that creative behavior is still elusive, occurring only in certain cases. A review of the interbehavioral literature in both English and Spanish on creativity was done to identify different lines of research on this topic. In the present document, it is suggested that what is usually referred to as "creative behavior" is actually two behaviors: the behavior of the creator and the behavior of the critic. The understanding of these two aspects of creative behavior makes it possible to develop appropriate methods to investigate this phenomenon, and to consider the aspects of creativity that needs further exploration.
