A framework for secure applications with QoS

In this thesis we propose a solution to support Quality of Service (QoS) network communication transactions modeled on differentiated services and economic principles. We propose an enhanced user-level negotiation protocol where transactions are accomplished in a secure mode and where resource allocations are simple and fair. With the availability of inexpensive network monitoring hardware, any issue dealing with network security becomes a priority. Current networks must support multiple levels of service over a single network connection. Differentiated levels of service create new resource management problems for network middleware. Just as a first class passenger is willing to pay the premium for superior service, today's customers are ready to pay extra for preferential treatment of their network traffic. We cannot have a separate airplane for each first class passenger; similarly we cannot have a separate network connection for each of our customers. Therefore, the bulk of network traffic must flow through shared lines. Resource management is a fundamental concept in the design of operating systems and is quickly becoming one of the most important concepts in network operating system design.
