The Problem Areas in Diabetes scale: A follow-up study

Currently many support and educational services are available for persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Yet there are still numerous people with less than desirable long-term outcomes in terms of overall health status. The Problem Areas in Diabetes scale is a newly developed instrument designed to measure emotional distress associated with the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Results of its use have been previously published for three different population groups. The primary focus of this study was to describe the relationship between the scores on the Problem Areas in Diabetes scale and HbA1C laboratory test results for persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The relationship between the Problem Areas in Diabetes scale and other variables such as age, gender, race/ethnicity, length of time since diagnosis, and type of treatment for those same individuals have also been considered.
