Comparison of in-place versus laboratory binder properties of asphalt

In this study Hot Mix Asphalt binder properties from laboratory aged specimens were compared to binder extracted from field specimens. The properties were Absolute Viscosity, Penetration, Bending Beam Rheometer creep stiffness, Bending Beam Rheometer m-value and Direct Tension failure strain. The data for the study were collected from Clark County Public Works project files. The comparisons showed that: (1) there was no difference between the field and laboratory specimens for absolute viscosity, (2) there was a significant difference between the field and laboratory specimens for penetration, and (3) there was no conclusive evidence that the other three properties were the same or different between the laboratory and field specimens.
