Evidence of the Chumash plank canoe at Ca-Sba52, Santa Barbara County, California

The Chumash plank canoe or tomol, was an important part of the maritime subsistence pattern of the Chumash as well as an important element in the maintenance of a complex heirarchical socio-political structure. The placement in time of the origin of the tomol is critical to many models of culture change and cultural ecology in the Santa Barbara Channel area. The assemblage of artifacts and features at CA-SBa-52 on the Goleta Slough adds to the body of data regarding the development of the tomol and indicates that it may have had a longer history in the area than previously suspected.
