Measuring efficiency in the Clark County hotel casino industry

The analysis and comparison of productivity in the service sector have proven to be difficult. Nevertheless, the Tomqvist index of relative productivity used in this study allows me to compare the relative productivity of different hotel-casino properties, while avoiding the usual problems that arise when measuring efficiency in service industries. This empirical study illustrates the efficiency of index numbers in evaluating relative efficiency. The simplicity of the model and its ability to evaluate all aspects of the production process, including economies of scale, renders this methodology far superior to the use of direct indexes. From calculations included in the study, I find that the technological and managerial efficiency declines for all hotel-casinos in the market when controlling for scale effects. However scale economies still provide significant benefits to the larger groupings of firms in the market.
