The inclusion of herbal remedies in the patient care practices of nurse practitioners

The purpose of this study was to describe the extent that nurse practitioners acquire knowledge, evaluate, recommend, and teach the safe use and acquisition of herbal remedies to their patients. Additionally, the study sought to investigate factors associated with the frequency nurse practitioners recommended herbal remedies. A survey was constructed and mailed to 600 randomly selected members of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; Of the 304 returned questionnaires, 264 of the respondents identified exclusively as family nurse practitioners (FNP). Because of the low response rate for specialties outside of family nurse practitioners, the study sample utilized consisted exclusively of family nurse practitioners; As a result of the study's findings, recommendations include that nurses in advanced practice roles develop practice guidelines which ensure the safe use of herbal remedies in patient care practices. It is also suggested that nurse practitioner educational programs should include curricula which instruct in the safe inclusion of herbal remedies in patient care practices.
