Hollywood's image of the working woman

Hollywood's Image of the Working Woman examines the stereotypes presented of working women in main stream Hollywood films. The thesis compares films portrayals of working women from "women's films" of the 1930s and 1940s with more contemporary films from the 1980s and 1990s. The paper explores the idea that there are "hegemonic processes" at work in American culture that limit the possibilities for substantive change in the way mass media portray women. This study will investigate whether these processes are at work in films which center on career-oriented female characters.
