Previous specifications used for asphaltic concrete mix designs in the Clark County area allowed for a wide range of aggregate gradations. The aggregate gradations in the asphaltic concrete mixes produced from these specifications tended to be on the finer side of the range. The pavements constructed based on the specifications were observed to be tender and susceptible to rutting. Paving projects were initiated which demonstrated that coarser aggregates in the asphalt mixes appeared to reduce rutting.
