Answers were carefully examined to determine how much young children understand about the water cycle, to see what misconceptions they have about the water cycle, and to compare children's understanding of the water cycle between those children who live in a desert region and those children who live in a mountainous region. The results indicate that nearly half of the children are completely confused about the water cycle, according to my operational definition. Further explanations of their understanding are given. Other misconceptions are also found among the children.
