The study was conducted in two communities located in Northeastern Minnesota during the spring of 1990. Data were gathered via a mailed questionnaire, which was developed to assess patterns of social interaction before, during, and after the recession. The analysis showed both communities experienced an increase in orientation toward extracommunity systems over the three periods. Age was specified as a condition which affected changes in perception of problems within the community, behavioral attachment and psychological ties to the community.
