Impacts of the Little Ice Age on the vegetation of southern Nevada
Abstract
dc:description.abstractFossil woodrat middens from a wash near Searchlight Nevada were used to reconstruct the timing and magnitude of vegetation change using Larrea tridentata, Coleogyne ramosissima, and Yucca sp. The study revealed that Coleogyne appeared in the midden at 600 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 50 yr B.P., and full Coleogyne community establishment occurred by 470 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 60 yr B.P. The increase in Coleogyne was coincident with the climatic shifts during the Little Ice Age, 1250 A.D. to 1800 A.D., and was probably caused by increased precipitation.
